Prospect and Refuge

Through the evolution of American homes they have increased in size. This is solely due to the increase in American jobs and increase in pay checks. Through this evolution the theory of Prospect Refuge comes into play in most homes. The idea of family rooms and great rooms were introduced right after World War Two when houses started getting bigger and floor plans became more open. This also introduced the notion that people want their bedrooms to be refugees that they can seek solidarity in since the rest of the home is for entertainment.

Example of Open Prospect
With Great Rooms in the home, people wanted to be able to have a broad view, one that typically has large windows that allows in light and gives a view. For me, when i think of a large living space it is solely for entertaining company. So it would be important for me while designing to make a place that offers seating, has a focal point, but also encourages conversation. A good design is a conversation starter in itself. The living room from my past home offered a large prospect that allowed light in through the big windows and had a large viewing space. In that space, it was so fun to have friends and family over for parties and holidays. It was a space I was proud of and loved spending time in.

Refuge

When I think of my bed room, I think of a refuge. It's a place where I crave to be after a long, stressful day. It is the one place in the world where I know I can always be myself in, relax, and recharge. A good bedroom should be a refuge for the person who inhabits that space. My idea of a bedroom isn't very elaborate. Especially for adults, I would prefer to design using neutral or light color patterns that encourage relaxation and light. When I am in a room with dark colors, I tend to have heavier emotions or feelings when I am in that space. Therefor, I choose to surround myself with lighter colors in my resting space. However, my best friend Liv (which I have mentioned before) thrives in a darker bedroom. It is definitely important to know who you are designing for and what their preferences are. Offices are also another refuge in a home. An office is a extremely private place for the person who walks in it, and while it should have a few chairs incase company has to be held in there, it should be highly customized and comfortable to the user.
