Ergonomics
Have you ever spent a late night in the library or working on a project sitting on the floor and your back is killing you? Or maybe you are sitting in class and the lights are so bright that you get a raging migraine and just want to run out of the room? Yeah, me too, this is why it is so important to take ergonomics into consideration when designing your work space at home or in your office. Ergonomics is the study of people's efficiency in their working environment.
Things to keep in mind when designing a office or work space:
Lighting is a major part in being able to work comfortably in a work space. For example, In my living room I have an adjustable lamp so I can adapt my lighting to what ever task I am trying to complete. In my home office one day I would like to have adjustable recessed lighting so I can adapt to my eye sensitivity or fit it to my mood for the day. In several of my general education classes, the lighting in the lecture room would be the awful bright fluorescent lighting and on multiple occasions it triggered a migraine and i would have to exude myself and miss a lecture solely because I could not function properly in the space due to over stimulation.
Reducing stress on wrists, back, knees, and necks is super important in your work space. Having seating, mouse pads, pillows, and supports that will increase your comfort will not only impact your day, but impact your life. When these important precautions are avoided back issues, carpal-tunnel, and body pains. When using these things in a space it will increase comfort, productiveness, and efficiency.
Things to keep in mind when designing a office or work space:
- Lighting
- Reduce Stress
- Reduce Excessive Motion
- Add Places and activities to stretch
- Focus on being able to work in comfort zones

Being able to reduce excessive motion is also crucial for reducing strain on your back. To help this, strategically place shelving, candies, and desks so you don't have to transfer heavy loads from long distances or odd angles. Adding stretch zones inside an office space is beneficial for physical and mental health. Being able to stretch and move around will improve posture as well as a well needed break. It is also important to be able to identify and work in favor of your comfort zones to reduce stress on your body.
