Anthropometrics
Have you ever been on a train, bus, or plane and have felt packed in like a can sardines? Yeah, I've been there too. Public transportation isn't very convenient but it gets the job done everyday. The study of anthropometrics is used every day in the design of cars, homes, apartments, and more. It really comes into play heavier when designing spaces like business class, first class, and coach spaces on air planes. Anthropometrics are measurements used to assess the size, shape and composition of the human body.

I am putting such large emphasis on air planes because in that particular scope there is no common area, and for the most part, you are sitting next to a stranger. In this space it is easy to become very territorial over an arm rest or leg space. This is why it is so important to use Anthropometrics so in spaces like this people can function and feel semi-relaxed and not irritated. No one wants a real life bridesmaids airplane scene in their life. The most irritating thing that has happened to me on a long flight was on my way to Ireland and over the night while I was sleeping, the stewardess had a nasty attitude and every time she would walk by with the cart she would hit it into my elbow that was on the armrest and huff like I was in her way. To avoid episodes like this, Aircraft designers are being more innovative with their designs and ways to create personal space in a non personal environment.

Anthropometrics is taken into consideration in almost everything we use. Have you ever considered how your desk chair is made? They way it is adjustable to you body to accommodate you specific measurements? It was not a coincidence, it is a well thought out design that has taken into consideration the measurements of human bodies.
Anthropometrics takes a play when we are focusing on our health and weight. It is used when measuring our BMIs and waist lines. It is hard to give just one example of anthropometrics because there are so many examples. Anthropometrics is used in almost every product we use on a day to day basis. It is what makes the world semi universal to everybody.
